Default ca/blo over painted blank

I'm new to the turning world and am trying to find out what would be the best finish to use over blood wood with a painted on design? I've used a couple different finishes and my present personal choice is a ca/blo finish but I'm not sure if this would ruin the painted design. Would a ca/blo finish be ok or should I try something else?

Hi Fader

Can't help with your question. Just wanted to welcome you to the forum.

A thought. If you have a bit of the Bloodwood left you might try and turn it round and put a few dabs of your paint on it. Try the finish on it and it there is no problems, do the pen. If the first finish doesn't work out remove it and repeat with something else until you find one that works.

Hello Fader,

Labrador City, in Newfoundland and Labrador? If so, very cool. Welcome also.

Try Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic spray (http://www.penturnersparadise.ca/for...ead.php?t=5278) on your painted "trial run" blank first. Spray it with several "thin" coats. Waiting for it to dry thoroughly after each coat.

I see you have a Walmart in Labrador, City. I bought my spray from Walmart (was on sale for $4).

Then follow Les' "Medium CA Only Pen Finish Tutorial" --> http://www.penturnersparadise.ca/for...ead.php?t=2180

Please note: the clear acrylic spray is to protect your art work. The CA finish is to provide a nice durable shinny finish.

Good luck and show you art work/pen.

Thanks for the hellos, and yes I am in Labrador City, NL. Just on the border of labrador and quebec.

Thanks for the ideas, I've been trying to think what I could use to help protect the actual art itself since I was thinking the friction from applying the CA might smear or rub it away. I'll have to give it a try and hopefully it will all turn out ok.

Welcome to paradise Fader, hope you enjoy it here.
I have tried CA over a spray paint once and it did not work well. The CA attacked the paint and the paint cracked and shrived up. Kind on neat look, but not what I was trying to achieve.

I finally got around to trying. I made two barons using bloodwood, one as a tester and one that was going to be the good pen.

Test# 1 - CA only method. Sprayed four light coats of Crystal Clear Acrylic gloss spray paint and let dry. Followed Les' "Medium CA Only Pen Finish Tutorial" but at the end when I wet sanded the painted on design fell victim and started to rub off since it wasn't exactly flush with the blank

Test# 2 - CA/BLO mixture. Sprayed four light coats of Crystal Clear Acrylic gloss spray paint and let dry. Ran lathe at 1800rpm (approx) and ran one drop of BLO across the blank, then added 2-3 drops of medium CA and ran it across with a couple quick swipes. Found that the CA became a lot more tackier then usual when doing a CA/BLO finish. Checked condition afterward and looked good. Added 2nd coat. After 2nd I very lightly sanded with 6000MM and then rubbed with white lint free cloth. Repeated for a total of 6 coats in total and finished with 3 coats of Huts High Gloss Plastic Polish.

In the end it turned out very well and I can't see any damage to the paint itself. Letting it sit for the night just to make sure all is ok. Pictures will follow.

Hi Fader & welcome to PPP, I'm sure you'll find lots of useful info here. Just a question for you (or anyone else that wants to jump in) if you use the Acrylic spray to start why not just carry on with that to finish the pen & forget about the CA or BLO/CA?
Is there some reason not to use the Krylon (or any other) Clear Acrylic as a complete finish (apart from the time factor perhaps)?

I used the gloss spray paint to start it mainly as a protection for painted design. I decided to go with the gloss since I wasn't going to be able to do a finish that would require a lot of rubbing and the gloss paint brought out the colours of the wood and paint very nicely. The BLO/CA finish was to then seal it all in, I didn't want the paint to rub off from usage over time and the CA should provide a long term.

I could be completely wrong in my process (I'm still new and learning, started turning June 4th) and decision to go this route, but it seems like it worked.
