Cast my first plain colour blanks.
When turning I find there is a difference between the outside and ends and the resin close to the tube.
The outside chips easily while the closer I get to the middle (tube) the easier it turns with the long curlies.
My thinking is that the outside and ends are curing too fast (temp?) while the inside is curing slower. Also maybe a bit too much catalyst.
Any thoughts before I do my next cast.

I was in a pen swap on another forum and this is the Cebloplast pen I made for my partner. The section is black acrylic made to fit a Schmidt #5 nib with a fine point if I remember correctly. I also provided a Schmidt rollerball tip that he can screw in in place of the fountain pen nib and feed if he prefers. Ink is either with cartridges or a converter. As this is my 6th pen made from scratch it doesn't have a clip. The next will. ;) Length capped is approximately 15cm, uncapped 13cm, weight 19 grams with empty converter and the cap to barrel thread is a 12mm triple start.

Any of the Canadian posters tried this? The signup process is pretty easy and response time seems fast. I decided to give it a go. Sent the application in on Saturday and received my approval today. I can key enter credit cards now (at a higher rate) but my swiper should be here by the end of the week or early next week. Since I do sell some work by consignment at a 40% fee I don't find the 2.7% swiped or 3.7% key entry fees all that bad for selling at shows etc. but would like others opinions.

I have been asked to quote on an order for 300 pen and pencil kits. They would like them engraved with one or possibly two lines of text. I am looking for personal recommendations for engravers in southern Ontario. I know I can look in the phone book or Google it but, since I've never had engraving done before, I want someone with a track record for doing pens with people on this forum. I have had Custom Laser in Elora recommended before but their web site doesn't seem to exist anymore so I presume they're out of business. I would also prefer someone fairly local so I can actually go and see their work but would work with someone farther away if I get multiple or a very strong recommendation on them.

A while back Marla and I traded some blanks. I gave Marla some cooked Birdseye and I got some of her cast feather pens. We had been talking about making repairs to casts. She sent me some blanks with air bubbles. Even thought these blanks needed repairs I think I still got the better deal!

The blank had a small bubble. So I turned it down to close to the final diameter which exposed the bubble. Then I hand sanded it down to gouge out all of the bubble. I was concerned that the bubble which was only 1 or 2 mm in diameter would have been too small to try an fill. (actually I tried this first and the resin didn't fill the small hole) The enlarged rough gouged area gave more surface area for the repair. I did not polish the repair area prior to adding the resin, I left it rough. Then I poured the resin into the gouged area. I did not heat the resin up prior to pouring it I wanted it a little stiffer. After it had set up I turned it down to the final diameter and finished it with micro mesh and Beall wheel.

Look at the second picture you can not find the repaired area.

Thanks Marla

One of the metal finishers at work retired last week and I decided to give him a pen rather than give to the cash collection going around the plant. Since one of his hobbies is fixing old clocks I thought a watch pen would be fitting. I had Marla :) glue on the parts (set the time to 4:30 for quitting time) and make the casting for me. You gotta use the expertise you have available. ;) I turned, buffed and assembled the Emperor Rollerball, a Rhodium and 22 Karat Gold kit if I remember correctly. The guy loved it and said it was too much. That made it all worthwhile. :D
