The college has just installed a new CNC machine in the wood shop. The machine is very versatile and easy to operate after a short learning curve. I've found it to be a great labor savor. One of my students was kind enough to take some photos.

It has the 360 degree bilateral high tension chipper modification, doesn't it. I saw one once with the mini-chainsaw attachment. That puppy could make chips!

Aww that's a cute little CNC. :):):) When I go to work tomorrow I'll take a couple pictures of his bigger cousin. Doesn't have the planing attachment though.

I am always most appreciative when Larry takes the time and patience to carefully instruct me in the safe operation of equipment like this...

The college really benefits from his expertise!

Thanks Larry!

Here are a few pictures of a CNC we have at work used to make aircraft parts. It stretches 190 feet from end to end and is about 12 feet wide. There are 4 gantries that move back and forth and can cover the entire bed if needed. So far the longest parts were wing spars for the 757 at around 60 feet. 2 of the 4 gantries have the origional hydraulic motors of 40 horsepower each and there are 3 on each gantry. Two have been upgraded to electric motors, with the others to follow, with one converted to 2 spindles with a greater range of travel and rotation. The one Larry showed is a 3 axis so it moves left, right plus up and down. These are 5 axis machines that also have the spindles tilt front and back and left and right. (You could make cones for example.)

Converted Gantry, tilted to make it easier to change tools.

Same machine from about 60 feet back. The parts on the table are around 45 feet long when finished.

The gantry converted to 2 spindles with a greater range of motion. It will be making a big part from a titanium forging that will cost over a third of a million before we cut into it. Those guys aren't me. I inspect the parts that come off.

One of the hydraulic Gantries. The three covers are the tool magazines.

The creamy looking stuff you see in the pictures is a waterbased coolant that the cutters are flooded with. With planing attachments you could get a nice finish on a long boardroom table but the coolant might cause the wood to gain some moisture. Maybe replace it with linseed oil and finish the wood at the same time! :D

If the friendly wager was large enough for me to pay one of the programmers and the foreman then you would loose that bet! :( One piece closed end spiral fluted in titanium might be nice. :)
