I have just finished turning my first Coffee bean blank and am wondering what to finish it with.
I tried CA but the brown from the beans came out and spread over the white resin.
Thanking you in advance.

Oh No . . . you must have used the wrong brand of coffee beans. :D ;) :) You need coffe beans picked personally by Wan Valdez
Seriously though , I had no problem at all with using BLO/CA finish. Could be the wipe across with BLO before applying the CA that did the trick ? . .
Which reminds me . I have to make a few more. I have only made a couple so far and both sold rather quickly.

The ones that I have made I only did a wet sand with no finish, leaves it smelling like coffee(by request). But in time it will make your fingers brown.

Thanks for your replies,
I will definitely change my supplier. :D:D
I will give the BLO then CA ago.
I thought about leaving it natural but the beans looked too dull for my liking.

I second the no finish, but I dry sand & MM. The smell is the clincher ~ folks just love it!! :)

I dipped the blank in lacquer , this made the beans swell slightly, it also gave it a cheap plastic look.
So I MM it to 1200 and the result is like Bill young's photo above, I am very happy the result.
Next time I think I will not put a finish on it I love the smell my self.

Hi Mark it is called Resin Spray from Castin'Craft (multi-purpose clear gloss finish sealer) I get it from a place in Perth but I will look around and get back to you as to where you can get it from.

That is what I use on every one of my coffee bean pens.
The beans are soft compared to the base they are in and I think those pens would start looking pretty bad after a year or so of use.
I believe a good finish on them is more important than the smell of the beans. Coffee left in the open air will lose its smell in time so you wind up with an unfinished pen with no coffee smell.
Different strokes for different folks but I always say it isn't finished until it is 'finished'

Photo showing the brown from the bean and CA gone hard on the left hand end of pen.
I have sanded it back twice, and each time the same thing happened.
I thought that eventually the CA would have stabilised the beans.

Even on my big 18 x 47 lathe I don't make pens that big.

I've only done one so far. Treated it like wood. Sanded to 600 grit, flooded the surface with thin ca, when that was dry put 4 coats of medium CA on and let dry between applications. (no BLO) Sanded very lightly with 600 grit just to remove any ridges then 4 more coats of CA with BLO to get a nice smooth coat. Polish with plastic polish.

Never done one myself but wonder if the proximity to the bushings has anything to do with it? Did you "flood" the first coat on or work it in with a paper towel? Just thinkin'
