I've read that TrueStone is made like this:
"made by taking the semi precious stone and pulverising it into a powder form and then mixing it with a resin so that it can be turned, drilled, cut etc."
Is it the same thing for Gem stone sold at penblanks.ca? Different supplieur using a similar name for a similar product?
So in this case, the Chilean Lapis Gemstone is made from crushed real lapis mixed with 15% resin?

Found this elsewhere:
"These blanks are made from 85% real stone that has been beaten to a pulp, reconstituted with resins and formed into blocks and sheets."
Not sure Louis
I recently got some TruStone blanks from CUSA and they smell like the other acrylic blanks from CUSA. They are harder though then standard acrylic.
Also the Lapis blanks would seem hard to reproduce the veining effect if it were pulverized then reconstituted with resin. Meaning it seems like it would blend some and change the color properties

I find Tru Stone turns really nice. Here is where I have been getting mine from. Anthony gives very good service and his prices are the best.

I too have been wondering what I can tell my customers. Best I can do is say it is 85* gemstone crushed & mixed with acrylic.
I'm not even sure if this is truestone or something else.
Yes if it is crushed then one would think it would be one solid color? So where does the web come from?
Just curious because I'm sure I will get asked a few questions.
FWIW they do turn & polish up nicely.

If you have a volt ohm meter, take a continunity reading off the vein material...I was wondering if it might be fake gold guilding foil shredded into the mix...if it is conductive....

Hi Louis
The gemstone blanks we sell are actually called "pliable Gemstone" by the company that makes them. They are made specifically for turners - crushed gemstone mixed with 15% resin and formed into blanks. If they're not pliable, they are much more brittle and harder to work with.
So yes, in your case, the Chilean Lapis is crushed real lapis mixed with 15% resin.

PS Saw the photos of the lapis Barons you made - gorgeous!

Thanks Lilian.
Had a thought after you posted this.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get tru stone or gem stone blanks in larger sizes. Like bottle stopper size or slightly larger?

I recently got some imperial stone blanks at 1" x 1" ,never done bottle stoppers ,so no idea on size, the person I got this from cuts them from blocks so may be able to do bigger on request . This is in AU and he imports direct from overseas.
He's a pen turner on another forum and has a part time supplies business .
Cheers John :)

The original supplier/manufacturer does sell them in bigger pieces.
