bowl ever!
Manitoba Maple that has been drying for 3 years. 7" in diameter and 2-1/2" deep. Used my 3/4" roughing gouge and 1/4" round nose scraper. Will have to get the proper chisels for bowl turning if this one works out.
As always comments and or suggestions welcome.
Thanks for looking.

Nice work Les. Are you going to reverse chuck the bowl to finish the bottom? If so, how are you planning on doing it?

Thanks Peter.

I'm not set up to reverse chuck so I have finished the bottom on the chuck. I will part off the tenon and finish the bottom of the foot once off the lathe.

Very nice, Les.

I must say, though, that using a roughing gouge on any size bowl is a recipe for disaster. The tangs on those gouges is not made to take the forces that a bowl will apply to them. If you have ever read the american association of woodturners forum, you may already know that they are lobbying manufacturers to properly call these tools "spindle roughing gouges" rather than simply "roughing gouges". When the tang breaks, and it will some day, the least of your worries will be a damaged bowl. I'll get off my soapbox now.

As to reverse chucking, you may want to make yourself a donut chuck. They are cheap and easy to make and offer a great way to turn the tenon off the bottom of the bowl.

Nice work!

You know, I have heard something about clean shops and evil minds:confused:

And something else about neat work bench tops and wasted storage space;)

I have some rethinking to do........:D
