Calling all penturners with Christmas Spirit...

Show off your best "Christmas" themed pen by posting a photo of your masterpiece in this forum. Your fellow turners and Penturner's Paradise members will then get a chance to vote for the winner.

The only guideline is that the theme be Christmasy - and you can post up to 2 photos of your entry, along with a description. One entry per member.

Winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to penblanks.ca.

Here's how it works:
1. Post your image in this thread - deadline for posting is Friday December 14.
2. After the deadline, I will post a poll in this thread and everyone will be able to vote for their favourite entry. Voting will start Saturday December 15 and be available until Friday December 21. Every member may only vote once.
3. Winner will be announced following the close of voting.

Yes, I will be...but that was a typo on my part...deadline is Dec 14 not Dec1. Thanks for pointing that out:)

I keep looking for the entries. Being the shy, retiring type, I wanted to see if it is worth entering, or if the competition is too tough.

I think Terry should be the first in line. :D:D:D

All agreed??

It looks a little like an old BIC. The Holly tends to get in the way, but you get used to it. Let me know how much you love it.

It can be whatever you like - there are no rules for that:). I'm guessing that's probably not helping you though...

Has anyone ever tried making a pen out of a pine cone?

Just a random thought.

I've seen one done, but can't remember where. Terry Hyde did one if I'm not mistaken? Nonetheless, it looked very cool !

Hi all.....
This is my entry for the Christmas pen. It is a stretched out celtic knot of the Christmas colors, green and red with a yellow "halo" for the center band. The blank is maple and the lines are dyed veneer. The pen kit is the new sierra click.

Well i blew it, my idea didn't work:mad:
It was going to be a pen made from Nordmann Fir pine needles (The non-drop xmas tree) cast in acrylic.
But alas it was not to be, i think it may be to cold at the moment here to cast things properly.:(

Still theres always next year.

Good luck to all the others, hope you have better success than me.:)

Just a second. I believe there was one other entry to this contest. A beautiful retro-style BIC adorned with holly. I will be posting a tutorial on how I made this beauty once I finish spending the $50 gift certificate.

Oh darn I must of forgot to hit the submit button earlier.

Anyway I too am out. I tried to make a pen in the shape of a candy cane, using some red striped box elder. I blew 2 of those so tried a birch one...twas not to be. Too many mistakes, and I had other things to catch up on. Perhaps next year I'll get my idea a little sooner. At least I learned what not to do the next time I try so not all is lost.

Andy thats a beautiful pen why wouldn't you want it entered.

Lillian said nothing about it having to be new...but then maybe thats a given I don't know.

I just say that because I failed & I was just looking at some old pictures thinking I could find something there.

Anyway nice pen & a great photo.

Nope, Bob's right, the rules don't say whether new or old. It just says "best Christmas-themed pen":)

Kit is El Grande ballpoint. Blank is sculpey with poly finish.

The cap was baked twice; once to form the trees, then again after the sky was formed around the trees. The snow went from white before the bake to whatever it is now after the bake. Sculpey will hear from me. :D

No photoshop was used in the production of this pen, except for rotating and cropping.

All design credits go to my wife, Jennifer.

Good looking pen there Grant. I've made 1 and have a few more El Grande ballpoints, but I didn't real care for the Kit. Once I've used them I'll stick to the new prmium cigar. Maybe I'll save one for the next Christmas contest. Lot's of room to work on it.

I'm with you. I'm not a big fan of the kit, either. But it gave me the size that I wanted for the trees.

Has anyone ever tried making a pen out of a pine cone?

Funny you should ask, I'm working on my third cone pen this evening, in fact. Cast up 15 of them last night, and 3 have already ended up on the floor in my giant pile of dirty words, but I'm figuring it out!

This third one looks to be the most promising of the ones I've made so far, and it's out of the casting set that I had no hope for(Cast it too hot, it ended up smoking a little bit, and cracking as it cured - I think the sap in these things affects the PR resin a little or something - couldn't be the fact that I overcompensated on the catalyst due to the winter cold, that'd make too much sense. heh).

Basically, for me so far, the recipe for cone pens is one part pine cone, two parts resin, 6 parts oopserglue, 15 parts expletives, and 347 parts stubborn bullheadedness that will eventually see me making my fortune selling usable blanks.

Swear to God, sometimes I just wannna...you know...just... *makes choking motion with hands*

Sure am glad I took up penturning as a stress reliever...GAH! Arg.

You know, I've been hearing good things about that whole knitting thing.

Needlepoint, anyone?

Canasta?

Shoot, at this point...I think I'll just go shave my cat for fun.

Feliz friggin' navidad.

Now Grant, it's just plain not fair to be bringing in a ringer! heh

Wonderful pen! I'm amazed that that's polymer and not paint. Hang on to her!

Okay, I guess I should give you the obligatory "Wow, you're a wonderful pen maker" and all that, but you know that pen's all about her! hehe

When you guys going to start selling blanks? My toaster oven always trips the breaker when I've got the lathe on...:p
