Here is the idea and I need some input. I'm wanting to turn a pen and incorporate a Celtic Knot in it from a lighter wood. I want to line the knot with a thin black line on either side of the lighter wood and need suggestions on what to use. I'm thinking some type of plastic, maybe gutiar pics or something, not real sure. Any ideas? or Do you even think that will look good?

Troy,

The concept sounds great.... just remember the kerf of the cut needs to match the thickness of your knot material. As to the black outline material.. boy you could use just about any plastic type material or even a thin wood(like ebony)
I alway keep packaging when we by something that is supported with plastic forms. I also use pick guard but that has a cost ..works very well

I look forward to seeing the finish pen..good luck

Try sheet styrene, it is available in white or black, varying thickness, is not brittle, glues with CA very well, is somewhat inexpensive, and you can buy it at just about any model hobby shop…look for a hobby shop that carries a lot of model train stuff, it is used for fabricating lots of things.
Here is a link to one of the major manufactures.

They also ship by mail direct...
As was suggested, wood veneers work well also...the yellow green and red stripes are dyed veneer.

Love the detail in those pens Ed. Now that I've seen these I'll have to reconsider brass instead. I think it'll show up better than black against the darker wood. Beautiful work and may I ask, how did you cut the details in these pens?

Here is a simplified tutorial…
It looks somewhat complicated, but if you can build a pen, you can build the jig.

Troy: If you decide on black, burn it. :) Seriously, if you take your light wood inserts and scorch the faces with a propane torch, you will end up with very fine dark edge to your inserts. I just lay the inserts out on a metal plate and pass the torch over them. Flip them over and it's done.
